Junior User Interface/Usability Designer
Position Summary:
The role of the Junior User Interface/Usability Designer will be to develop UI design requirements, wireframes, and prototypes for website information architectures, user interfaces and user interactions.
Primary responsibilities of the Junior UI/Usability Designer will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Work as part of the User Experience team to develop an understanding of Zappos website users and create documents (i.e., personas) to communicate user behaviors, wants and needs.
- Help develop user interface specification documents, which typically include use cases, wireframes, conceptual models, interaction flow diagrams, navigation diagrams and information taxonomies.
- Gather and synthesize requirements and input from stakeholders and teams (including customers)
- Contribute to a usability standards guide for Zappos’ websites.
- Work with usability testing specialists to help define, plan and execute usability tests.
- Create prototypes (high and low fidelity) for use in usability testing.
The ideal candidate for this position will have:
o Experience in user interface design, user interaction design, product design or information architecture for web-based applications.
o Knowledge of industry standards, usability, trends in web development and ecommerce.
o Knowledge of visual/graphic design principles (note: this is not a web designer position, but an understanding of design principles as they relate to usability is important).
o High-level understanding of web site/web application functionality with a solid understanding of the relevant technologies (i.e. AJAX, CSS) and their inherent strengths and limitations relating to UX design.
o Knowledge of various research techniques to understand user requirements (i.e., card sorting, usability testing, and persona interviews).
o Beginner level experience developing, delivering and documenting user interface designs for web-based applications.
o Commitment to customer and to product quality – advocating for the users' needs
o Good writing and communication skills.
o Experience with UI design tools such as PhotoShop, Illustrator, Visio, Omnigraffle, etc.
o Minimum Associates degree or equivalent work experience.
o Big Pluses:
o Experience with developing semi-functional prototypes (i.e., HTML or Flash) is a big plus.
o Previous experience working with web analytics programs and interpreting data is a big plus
o Knowledge of localization and web accessibility standards is a plus.
