Carol Miller discussed elicitation challenges in our second webcast on 9/20.

Here is her short list:

  • The stakeholder
  • Lack of a framework
  • Scope definition and management
  • No training in elicitation techniques or supporting skills
  • Unrealistic constraints (schedule, scope)
  • The BA ego

The groundwork it takes for getting people out of the software industry mindset that you can elicit requirements from surveys and focus groups.

Stakeholders who come to an answer by "talking out loud" - you need to listen but not get vested in anything they say until they have truly come to their conclusion. It is important to identify stakeholders who think out loud as soon as possible.
